The moment when two bodies meet is a journey of countless possibilities, choices, surprises, retreating, throwing yourself into it, giving support and being supported. What kind of movement does the encounter create? And which direction does it take?
In this course, we focus on the core of pair work in contemporary dance – meeting the other person and listening to the movement. We explore the basic elements of partner work with playful kontakt-work, improvisation, and learn a choreography, where we dive into partnering foundations such as listening, using weight, practicing lifts and fluidity of movement.
The class is aimed at dance professionals, long-time practitioners and students of the field.
Class is taught in Finnish and English.
Nella Turkki is a dance and theatre artist, director and pedagogue, who has released several performances internationally both as a choreographer and dancer. In her works, Nella focuses on bringing diverse bodies and voices to the stage. Apart from stages, Nella has created performances in forests, schools, streets, bunkers and other non-conventional performance spaces. Nella’s main dance styles are contemporary dance, partnering and contact improvisation.
Nella gained her Master’s degree in Dance Art from Theatre Academy of Uniarts in Helsinki and has also studied contemporary dance in the University of Dance and Music in Cologne and Antron Bruckner University in Linz. In addition, Nella has a bachelor’s degree in theatre instruction from Turku University of Applied Sciences.
Nella believes that the encounters within artistic exploration are a vital force in current times.
Janis Heldmann is a German dancer, performer and musician with background in urban and contemporary dance. Janis has been performing for well known choreographers such as Susanne Linke, Samir Akika, Lorca Renoux and Julio Cesar Iglesias Ungo on the professional stages internationally. During the last years, Janis has been creating inter-disciplinary projects with various ensembles such as Metsän alaiset together with Nella Turkki and team.
In his workshops Janis combines different types of dance into a unique and playful body language, from contemporary dance to street dances. Janis’ partnering experience is strongly built on his experience in working with the dancers of the Ultima Vez-dance company from Belgium. Janis approaches the partnering playfully, joyfully and exploratively.
On the stage Janis is often dancing, playing music and acting, and he enjoys exploring the different elements and “out of the box -doing” in his art.

The aim of the workshop is to introduce the participants to the basic techniques of contemporary dance, body control and different types of movement.
The class consists of structured technique exercises and dance sequences based on limon and graham techniques. Exercises focus on tumbling and recovery, different movement rhythms, isolation techniques, assembly and release, and spinal rotation. Exercises are performed in a stationary position on the middle floor and moving across the room.
The workshop will conclude with a short choreography combining the techniques above and artistic expression.
The class is directed at everyone interested in contemporary dance!

Saija is a happy, gentle and well rounded dance professional, who has nearly 10 years of experience in teaching dance to different age groups and skill levels. In addition to teaching, she has danced on stage in contemporary pieces and choreographed for performing groups at Oulu-opisto.
