A glimpse of the wasteland of our minds – the landscape where we like to store our long shadows.
Hinterland is a show emerging from our time, created in a timeless style. It explores painful collective themes in tragicomical tones. The piece paints a picture of a community persevering under dire circumstances on no man’s land, blind to the consequences of its own actions. Somewhere between life and death, they curse the forces of nature and reach for mercy and freedom.
Hinterland was created through the art of Corporeal Mime, a poetic and skillful form of physical theatre rarely seen in Finland. The dramaturgical starting point was a collection of sombre short stories by Samuel Beckett written immediately after the Second World War. In the spirit of Beckett, the characters in Hinterland are cruel and tender, desperate and pompous, defiant in their smallness.
The award winning Kauri Honkakoski Company is known for atmospheric physical theatre shows that combine rich corporeal expression with deep human themes. Their acclaimed production The Desk won the Scotsman Fringe First Award at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2019. Hinterland features the Company’s talented international ensemble.

Kauri Honkakoski is a Helsinki-based physical theater director and Corporeal Mime artist, as well as the artistic director of Kauri Honkakoski Company. Kauri is known for their physical theater works, which are built on expressive bodies, vivid imagery, and physical dramaturgy. Their work is often experienced through collective and personal associations. Kauri’s performances have been seen at domestic and international festivals, most recently at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2019, where their ensemble piece Pulpetti (The Desk) was awarded the prestigious Scotsman Fringe First Award.
At the heart of Kauri’s artistic practice is Corporeal Mime, a skillful and poetic form of physical theater. At its core is the endeavour to physically express the entire rich spectrum of humanity, from concrete physical work to abstract dreams and thoughts. For Kauri, Corporeal Mime is a language of expression through which they feel they can capture something essential, profound, and shared about the human experience.
Honkakoski specialized in Corporeal Mime at the prestigious Theatre de L’Ange Fou in London (2006-2013), where they also worked as an assistant teacher and company performer. They have made artistic collaborations with, among others, the dance group Gruppen Fyran, the contemporary clowning group Kallo Collective, the visual artist Jukka Rusanen, and has worked as a freelance actor in productions of the Helsinki City Theatre, Wasa Teater and Punchdrunk (UK).
